About Ayder – Fırtına Valley

Ayder is a highland village at about 1,350 meters in Rize's Çamlıhemşin district, inside Kaçkar Mountains National Park. Waterfalls spill off the slopes around its wooden houses, and a thermal bath sits right in the center. The road up follows the Fırtına stream, which rises in the Kaçkars and races down to the Black Sea through a deep, forested valley. Along the way you pass single-arch stone bridges, Hemşin villages clinging to the hillsides and Zilkale, a medieval fortress rising out of the trees. Higher still, plateaus such as Pokut and Huser often look out over a sea of clouds.

Most Ayder tours are one day of a three- to five-day Black Sea itinerary from Trabzon or Rize, usually combined with Uzungöl and Sumela Monastery. Popular activities include rafting on the Fırtına, visiting Zilkale and the old bridges, stopping at Palovit Waterfall, riding up to the Pokut and Huser plateaus by jeep and hiking in the Kaçkars. Plateau roads are narrow and partly unpaved, so a local driver is the usual choice. On TurTalebi you can compare tours from local firms and book securely by card.

Top Things to See

01

Ayder Plateau and Hot Springs

Soak in the thermal bath at the center of the village with cool mountain air all around, then stroll past wooden chalets to Gelin Tülü Waterfall, which pours down the slope above.

02

Rafting on the Fırtına

Guided rafting runs start near Çamlıhemşin and are liveliest in spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells the river. Most sections suit first-timers who follow the guide's instructions.

03

Zilkale

A medieval castle perched on a rocky spur high above the Fırtına Valley, its walls emerging from thick forest. The drive up and the view down the valley are as memorable as the ruins.

04

Stone Arch Bridges

Graceful single-arch bridges span the Fırtına and its tributaries, once vital links between valley villages. Şenyuva is a classic spot to see one up close and take a riverside break.

05

Palovit Waterfall

A tall waterfall tumbling down a green hillside on the road toward the Palovit plateau. It makes an easy stop on a jeep tour and is at its most powerful in spring.

06

Pokut and Huser Plateaus

Pokut is famous for wooden chalets that seem to float above a morning sea of clouds, while Huser, above Ayder, offers quiet meadows and views toward the Kaçkar peaks.

Planning

Plan Your Trip

When to Go

June to September is the best time for Ayder and the Fırtına Valley, when plateau roads are open and summer life returns to the high pastures. For rafting, May and June bring the biggest water from snowmelt. This is one of the wettest corners of Türkiye, so expect rain in any season. Weekends in July and August get busy. In winter Ayder is quiet and snowy, but the higher plateaus are cut off.

Getting There

The closest airport is Rize-Artvin Airport in Pazar, while Trabzon Airport, about three hours away by road, offers more flights. From the coast road you turn inland at Ardeşen and follow the Fırtına Valley to Çamlıhemşin, then climb a narrower, winding road to Ayder. Minibus service in the valley is limited, so a tour, transfer or rental car is the practical way to reach Ayder and move between the plateaus.

Practical Tips

  • Rafting tours supply helmets and life jackets, but bring a change of clothes, a towel and shoes that can get soaked.
  • Even on sunny days, pack a warm layer and a rain jacket for the high plateaus, where fog and cold can roll in within minutes.
  • Roads to Pokut and Huser are narrow and partly unpaved, so a jeep tour with a local driver is the easiest way up.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

June through September is ideal, with open roads and lively summer plateaus. Choose May or June for the strongest rafting and September for fewer people. Ayder is open in winter too, but snow closes the roads to the higher plateaus and many activities pause.
