About Fethiye – Ölüdeniz
Fethiye is a harbor town on a wide, pine-fringed bay, built on the site of ancient Telmessos and steeped in Lycian history. The Tomb of Amyntas, carved into the cliff above the town, is its most striking reminder of that past. About half an hour to the south, Ölüdeniz curls around a sheltered, protected lagoon backed by Belcekız beach, while Babadağ mountain rises above it as one of the world's best-known paragliding sites. Add the ghost village of Kayaköy, Saklıkent Gorge and Butterfly Valley, and few places on the coast pack in as much history, nature and adventure.
Favorite Fethiye tours include the 12 Islands boat trip with swimming stops around the bay, boats from Ölüdeniz to Butterfly Valley and Gemiler Island, tandem flights from Babadağ and jeep safaris that pair Saklıkent with ancient Tlos. Cruising the bays around Göcek and hiking the Lycian Way toward Faralya appeal to more active travelers. Spread your plans over several days to balance time on the water with time inland. All ToursTop Things to See
Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon
Set within a protected nature park, the lagoon's calm, shallow water is ideal for families and kayakers. From the pine-backed beach you can watch paragliders spiral down from Babadağ.
Babadağ Paragliding
Tandem flights with experienced pilots launch high on Babadağ and glide over the turquoise lagoon before landing on Belcekız beach. No experience is needed, and flights depend on wind conditions.
Butterfly Valley and Faralya
Hemmed in by towering cliffs, the valley is usually reached by boat from Ölüdeniz, and Jersey tiger moths gather here in summer. The cliff-top village of Faralya above it sits on one of the most scenic stretches of the Lycian Way.
Saklıkent Gorge
Wade through ice-cold water into a deep, narrow canyon cut through the mountains. Afterward, relax on wooden platforms over the river near the entrance and visit the rock tombs of nearby Tlos.
Kayaköy Ghost Village
Abandoned after the population exchange between Greece and Türkiye, this former Greek village has hundreds of roofless stone houses and churches climbing the hillside. It sits in the hills between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz and is especially atmospheric in late-afternoon light.
12 Islands and Gemiler Island
Day boats weave between the islands and coves of the Gulf of Fethiye, stopping to swim in clear water. Trips from Ölüdeniz often call at Gemiler Island, known for the ruins of its Byzantine-era churches.

When to Go
May to June and September to October are the most pleasant months in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, with warm seas and comfortable weather for hiking and days on the water. Midsummer brings the most heat and the biggest crowds, and in July and August Ölüdeniz beach fills early. Walking inside Saklıkent Gorge is usually possible in summer, when the water level drops, which is also when the tiger moths gather in Butterfly Valley. Tandem flights from Babadağ run for much of the year whenever the weather allows.
Getting There
Dalaman Airport is the closest airport, roughly an hour's drive from Fethiye. Frequent minibuses run from central Fethiye to Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü and Ovacık, and regular services also reach Çalış and Göcek. You can also arrive from Antalya along the coastal road via Kaş and Kalkan, a scenic route that takes several hours.
Practical Tips
- The old footpath from Kayaköy down to Ölüdeniz makes a rewarding half-day hike; start in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
- Book your flight off Babadağ early in your stay, so if wind postpones it you can try again on another day.
- Head to the Ölüdeniz lagoon early in the morning for a calm swim, as the beach gets much busier after midday.
