About Didim
Didim sits at the tip of a peninsula reaching into the Aegean in southern Aydın province. At its heart rises the Temple of Apollo at ancient Didyma, once a famous oracle, whose towering columns and fine carving still astonish visitors. Nearby Miletus, one of the great Ionian cities, is known for its huge theatre and for philosophers such as Thales. Near Söke, Priene climbs a mountainside in neat terraces, with the columns of its Temple of Athena framed by pines. Down on the coast, the shallow golden sands of Altınkum make Didim a favorite with families.
The classic plan is a guided culture tour that links the Temple of Apollo, Miletus and Priene in a single day. On beach days, boats from Altınkum or the marina stop at nearby coves for swimming. Kusadasi and Ephesus are within day-trip range, and nature lovers can add walks around Lake Bafa. In the evening, the Altınkum seafront and the market streets in town come alive. All ToursTop Things to See
Temple of Apollo at Didyma
One of the largest temples of the ancient world, Didyma housed an oracle often ranked just behind Delphi in fame. Don't miss the standing columns and the celebrated carved Medusa head.
Miletus Ancient City
Once a thriving port, Miletus now lies inland, cut off from the sea by silt carried by the Büyük Menderes (Meander) river. Its grand theatre and the Baths of Faustina are the highlights.
Priene Ancient City
Built in terraces on a mountain slope, Priene is one of the finest examples of ancient grid planning, crowned by the elegant columns of its Temple of Athena. Pine shade makes it a pleasant visit.
Altınkum Beach
Fine golden sand and water that stays shallow far from shore make Altınkum ideal for families with small children. A promenade lined with cafés runs along the beach.
Didim Boat Trips
Boats from Altınkum and the marina head to clear coves for swim stops. They make an easy, relaxing sea day or a pleasant short outing at sunset.
Lake Bafa
Between Söke and Milas, Lake Bafa combines the ruins of ancient Herakleia with dramatic rocky scenery. It is a peaceful escape for birdwatching and short hikes.
Plan Your Trip
When to Go
Beach season in Didim lasts from late May to mid-October. July and August are hot and busy, so the smart plan is to visit the ruins early in the morning and spend the afternoon at the beach. April, May, September and October bring mild weather that is ideal for exploring the Temple of Apollo, Miletus and Priene. Winters are mild and rainy, with quiet ruins and a sleepy town.
Getting There
The nearest airport is Bodrum-Milas, about an hour and a half away by road. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is roughly two hours away, with the route passing through Söke. Long-distance buses run directly to Didim. The Temple of Apollo is right in town, while Miletus and Priene are a short drive away, so seeing all three in one day is easy.
Practical Tips
- There is little shade at Miletus and Priene, so bring a hat, water and good walking shoes, especially for the uphill paths at Priene.
- Visit the Temple of Apollo early in the morning or late in the afternoon for softer light and fewer people.
- Even though the water at Altınkum stays shallow, keep children in sight at all times and seek shade in the midday sun.
