About Aegean

Türkiye's Aegean Region runs along a deeply indented western coast of coves and peninsulas, backed by valleys of olive and fig orchards and some of the greatest cities of the ancient world. Ephesus, Hierapolis-Pamukkale and Pergamon are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while the Temple of Apollo at Didim and the rock tombs of Kaunos near Dalyan add to that legacy. Each coastal town has its own character, from Bodrum's whitewashed houses and Alaçatı's stone lanes to Fethiye's Ölüdeniz lagoon and the old stone houses of Ayvalık and Cunda. Herb-rich, olive-oil-based cooking ties it all together.

A classic Aegean itinerary pairs Ephesus and the hill village of Şirince, starting from İzmir or Kuşadası, with the travertines of Pamukkale and a few beach days in Bodrum or Fethiye. Favorite experiences include boat trips, paragliding over Ölüdeniz, mud baths and turtle beach outings in Dalyan, windsurfing in Çeşme and climbing to the acropolis of Pergamon. The region is large, so building your trip around two or three bases saves time. On TurTalebi you can line up options from local firms side by side and book securely by card.

Highlights

Top Routes in the Region

01

Ephesus

The Library of Celsus, the Great Theater and marble-paved Curetes Street make Ephesus one of the best places to picture Roman city life. Most visits add the House of the Virgin Mary and Şirince.

02

Pamukkale and Hierapolis

Brilliant white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich water, topped by the ruins of Hierapolis, make up a UNESCO-listed site in Denizli. Shoes come off to walk the terraces.

03

Bodrum Peninsula

Bodrum Castle, whitewashed houses and boat trips to hidden coves make the peninsula one of the Aegean's liveliest holiday areas, while bays like Gümüşlük and Türkbükü each have their own mood.

04

Fethiye and Ölüdeniz

The Ölüdeniz lagoon, tandem paragliding from Babadağ and boat trips to Butterfly Valley make Fethiye the gateway to the Lycian coast. The 12 Islands boat tour is a local classic.

05

Çeşme and Alaçatı

Alaçatı's stone houses and windmills, Çeşme's clear beaches and reliably windy conditions for windsurfing make this peninsula a favorite summer escape from İzmir.

06

Pergamon and Ayvalık

Pergamon's steep acropolis, theater and Asclepion showcase the northern Aegean's ancient side, while Ayvalık and Cunda Island charm visitors with stone houses, olive oil culture and memorable sunsets.

Planning

Plan Your Trip

When to Go

Beach season on the Aegean runs from late May to mid-October; July and August are hot and crowded, with coves and boat trips at their busiest. For ancient sites like Ephesus, Pergamon and Pamukkale, April, May, September and October are kinder, without the midday heat. Summer winds draw windsurfers to Çeşme and Alaçatı. In winter the resort towns go quiet, but the mild climate still makes ruins and olive-grove villages pleasant to explore.

Getting Around the Region

The main airports are İzmir Adnan Menderes, Milas-Bodrum and Dalaman, with Denizli Çardak Airport handy for Pamukkale. Intercity buses connect the towns well, but a rental car or tour is easier for coves and small villages. A classic route starts in İzmir, takes in Pergamon, Çeşme and Alaçatı, then Ephesus and Kuşadası, detours inland to Pamukkale and finishes along the southern coast in Bodrum, Marmaris, Dalyan and Fethiye.

Practical Tips

  • Shoes are not allowed on the Pamukkale terraces, so bring a small bag to carry them, plus sunglasses for the dazzling white rock.
  • In summer, enter Ephesus as early as possible, since shade is scarce and the marble streets heat up quickly by midday.
  • Pack a hat, plenty of water and water shoes for boat trips, as many swimming stops are at rocky coves.
