About Kusadasi
Kusadasi spreads around a wide bay on the Aegean coast of Aydın province, with the Greek island of Samos on the horizon. Its emblem is Pigeon Island (Güvercinada), a small islet crowned by castle walls and joined to the shore by a causeway. The old bazaar lanes, marina and busy cruise port give the town plenty of energy, and cruise passengers from around the world set off from here for Ephesus. To the south, beyond Güzelçamlı, the Dilek Peninsula national park offers pine-backed coves with clear water and a quieter side of the coast.
Most visitors to Kusadasi set aside at least one day for Ephesus. Guided tours often combine the ancient city with the House of the Virgin Mary, the remains of the Temple of Artemis and the village of Şirince. For beach days, boat trips leave the harbor for swim stops in nearby coves, and national park outings take in Zeus Cave and calm bays. Jeep safaris and horseback rides add some adventure. Ephesus Ancient City
With the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and marble-paved Curetes Street, Ephesus is one of the most impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Mediterranean. It is a short drive from Kusadasi and works as a half or full-day trip.
Pigeon Island (Güvercinada)
Linked to the mainland by a causeway, this little island with its castle walls and footpaths is the town's landmark. A sunset stroll out from the harbor is a classic way to start an evening.
Dilek Peninsula National Park
Entered near Güzelçamlı, the park protects forested hills and a string of clear coves, with hiking trails above them. Arrive early in summer for cooler temperatures and easier parking.
Zeus Cave
Near the national park entrance, this small cave holds a cool, crystal-clear pool fed through the rocks. It makes a refreshing quick dip on a hot day, but watch your footing on slippery stones.
Şirince Village
Set in the hills above Selçuk, Şirince is known for its stone houses, cobbled lanes and fruit wines. Many Ephesus tours finish with an afternoon stop here.
Kusadasi Boat Trips
Boats leave the harbor, cruise past Pigeon Island and stop at nearby coves for swimming and lunch on board. It is an easygoing sea day that suits families well.

When to Go
Kusadasi's beach season runs from late May to mid-October. July and August are hot and crowded, and at shadeless sites like Ephesus you will want to arrive early in the morning. April, May, September and October bring mild weather and calmer visits, making them the best months for history tours. Winters are rainy but mild, and the town is noticeably quieter outside the cruise season.
Getting There
The nearest airport is Izmir Adnan Menderes, about an hour away by road; Bodrum-Milas Airport, roughly two hours away, is another option. From Izmir, the highway and the road through Selçuk lead straight to town, and Ephesus and Şirince are a short drive inland. The port welcomes cruise ships, and in summer ferries also cross to the Greek island of Samos.
Practical Tips
- Visit Ephesus early in the morning in summer, and bring a hat and water, because the site has almost no shade.
- The marble streets of Ephesus can be slippery and uneven, so wear comfortable shoes with good grip rather than sandals.
- Head to the national park early on summer weekends, as the coves fill up and the entrance gets busy by midday.
